Salina car museum The Garage shows off American muscle for new exhibit

A 1969 Chevrolet Camaro is part of the collection for the "Muscle Car Wars" exhibit that is now at The Garage in Salina.

Immediately after opening in February, The Garage, a car museum in Salina, has revved up its engines and debuted its hottest exhibit, “Muscle Vehicle Wars.”

Looking at the purely American product of muscle mass cars and trucks, Matthew Miller-Wells, the museum’s director of education, explained the 34-vehicle show, which opened in May, had a quick turnaround from the preceding exhibit.

“It went like clockwork,” Miller-Wells said. “Luckily for us these auto house owners are just elated to be in right here.”

Although the previous exhibit, “Horses to Horsepower,” had a choice of cars from locations in the Midwest and elsewhere in the region, Miller-Wells mentioned this time close to most of the American muscle autos on screen are from Salina or nearby communities in north-central Kansas.

“We have them organized as they would be in the horsepower wars,” Miller-Wells reported.

There are 3 key divisions in the museum, with manufacturers General Motors, Chrysler and Ford representing the “Big Three” American automobile providers.

A 1971 Ford Mustang sportroof is one of the cars on display in the "Muscle Car Wars" exhibit at The Garage in Salina. This particular model is the only one of its kind ever made.

When Miller-Wells explained individuals generally use the 1964 Pontiac GTO as marking the starting of the muscle period, there are a couple of vehicles that date back again as far as the late 1940s in the exhibit, as they had been important to the progress of American muscle.

“Following Planet War II anyone considered automobiles are predicted to be responsible, envisioned to glimpse cool, the problem was really what (new matter) can (carmakers) sell them,” Miller-Wells claimed. “So they started off heading again to speed.”
